Your body produces a fibrous protein called collagen that gives your skin its strength and resilience. You have plenty of collagen when you’re young, but after about age 25, production starts to decrease. Other factors also contribute to its depletion, such as smoking and the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The end result is your skin can no longer maintain its smooth texture, and you develop sags, wrinkles, and rough patches.
As you age, you can also develop hyperpigmented areas called age spots or sun spots, since the sun can trigger melanin production.
